The Challenges and Opportunities of Plastic Recycling

Introduction
Plastic is one of the most useful material in the world, besides it’s usefullnes. Plastic is one of the most dangerous material in the world. Every part of things in our lifes are contain plastic. Start from kitchen tools, transportation part and other things. Plastic divided into two kinds of; there’s single use-plastic and multiple-use plastic. So, talking about single-use plastic. Most of the plastic that’ve been used ended in the landfill and sea. Only 9% of the plastic waste are getting recycled and produced into something else useful.

In developed country, they’re started to recycle the plastic waste to reduce the waste that end in the landfill and developing the economies through small plastic processing business. But, the way that developed country started todo the plastic recycling business. It’s still not enough to end all the plastic waste problem around the world. Not every country, not every factory and not every people in this world wanted to do the plastic recycle process because some main reason. The quality is lower than the new plastic material, cost double money to recycle and other reason.

Background

In fact, almost 70% of the plastic waste ended in the landfill with no solution, thrown to the middle of the sea and causes disaster to the nearby enviroment and burn to the ashes with polution that flew to the air. A lot of organization that care about the earth, global warming and enviroment. Start a lot of event to awake awarness of people about the dangerous of plastic waste. The organization like green peace and WWF (World Wide Fund) started a lot of action to alert all the people in the world. But until today, only ¼ of people in the world aware about it. In indonesia, you can find a lot of people throw the plastic waste to the river, burn the plastic waste under the soil and thrown the plastic waste in the landfill. Not every people aware about the damage to the enviroment, to the earth, and to our future generation.

Other evidence about the ignorance of the people about the plastic waste in the world is the disaster that cause by the plastic waste littering. In the beginning of 2020, floods happened in almost every part of jakarta. The jakarta government are overwhelmed because the flood causes by clogged gutters. Clogged gutters are caused by indonesia people habit that thrown every rubbish to the river. In a normal weather, it doesn’t became a serious problem because the river keep flowing and bring the rubbis to the end of the river. But in rainy season, the rubbish stuck under the bridges, stuck in the suwer and make the water overflowed.

Other than that, education is one of the most important things to watch out for. People usually burn the plastic waste in the backyard because they think with this solution (Burn the plastic waste) then we reduce the plastic waste. It was a big NO and big mistake that usually done by people in the world. We can’t see them it doesn’t mean it we can’t feel it, we can’t see them it doesn’t mean it doesn’t bring effect to the enviroment. Burning the plastic ashes in the open enviroment like backyard will relase dangerous substances to the air and left the dangerous material to the soil that damage the soil element. A lot of people still lacks of education about plastic recycling in the world, one of them is Indonesia.

Alternatives

To change the people habit on plastic waste, enviromental care community have started a lot of movement to reduce the plastic waste. In Indonesia, market are started to charges fees on plastic bags so people will bring their own bag to reduce the plastic usage. This rules has been applied in almost all market in Indonesia. But, it’s not as effective as we think. The reason this rule is not effective is the charge fees, if you needed a plastic bag from the market because you don’t bring your own. The market will charge you only 100 until 500 hundred rupiah or 0.030 USD. It was a little amount so people will give up for the plastic bag.

Another movement that company or market do to reduce the plastic usage is giving discount to the people who bring their own bottle or tumblr to the milk shake store. A store that popular on selling drinks like ChaTime and Starbucks are applying discount for several percent for those people who bring their own tumblr to be filled with their drinks. The way they try to reduce the plastic usage is not effective enough. The effect only influence the loyal customer that usually buy from their store.

For the plastic bag charges, the way Indonesia tried to reduce the plastic usage among the people. Must be changed to something else more strict than the plastic bag fee charges, another way to reduce the plastic usage in a better way is BANNED all the plastic bag usages in every store. Like malaysia, they don’t give you plastic bag after you paid for all your groceries. Even you wanted to pay for plastic bag, they don’t have the plastic bag to give you. They only provide Tote Bag that priced hundred times more expensive than plastic bag so people will think twice to buy it. The way they use on reducing plastic usage is pretty effective because customer are forced to bring their own bag because there’s no more solution other than that. As long as people have an easier choice, they will not changed.

And for the plastic waste solution that applied by Cha Time and Starbucks. They needed to improve their rules in order to save the earth from plastic waste. As long they don’t put a high charges on plastic cup or bottlll, people will not care about it. People must be provided with something more assertive and something forceful so they will change how they live and their habit. The reccomendation for them is alike like plastic bag ban. Service provider should banned all the plastic cup or bottle and now allowed customer to take away their food or drink without their own container. So, if customer wanted to bring their food or drink away. They must  bring their own container or eat in place. This way will greatly affect the company income and got a lot of crirtisim. Beside that way, they also can changed all the tableware that contain plastic with something disposable and didn’t harm the enviroment.

Out there, there are still various ways to reduce plastic usage that haven’t applied by human. There are various ways to recycle plastic waste like turn into something useful, turn plastic waste into fuel and something else. But, If the plastic usage didn’t stop or getting reduced. Will the plastic waste processor clean the whole plastic waste in every part of the world?. To reduce the plastic usage, not only one party must move and act. Everyone include ourself needed to started a new habit that release the usage of plastic from our daily lives.

Solution

Modern problem need modern solution. This is the motto that people usually use when they try to solves a problem and support the other when facing a problem. But, plastic waste is not a modern problem. Plastic waste is a problem since a long time a go and still not resolved. Human are not aware and do not care about this plastic waste problem and today human are started to feel the impact. Plastic waste that buried in ground and end in the landfill damage the soil element and polluting the enviroment. Plastic waste that burn into ashes release toxic substances into the free air and cause damage to the ozone layer. Plastic waste that end in the middle of the vast ocean causes damage to the coral reefs and kill half of the sea enviroment. Every consequence that arise from plastic waste end up with something that really affect to the whole earth and it’s deadly if we don’t end it now. It’s called as “Global Warming”

If we don't have the power to change those company who are serving people with the plastic material things. We must started from ourselves, family and friends. In the world wide web, you can find a lot of example on how to reduce the plastic usage in our lifes. Although the impact felt small, if we can influence other people to reduce the plastic usage. It will be a great lesson for all of us. There’s a lot of things we can do to reduce the plastic waste in the world. The following is an example you can apply;

1.      EDUCATION OF PLASTIC HAZARDS.

Plastic is something that is difficult to be released from our daily lives. But, difficult it doesn’t mean we cannot. If you’re a teacher, a content creator, an artist or something else that be the center of people's attention and can change people's views with the ways of thinking. Share education about the hazardous of plastic and it’s effect to the earth. Education is a determinant of how someone will think to deal with something. Someone who are not educated will throw the rubbish include plastic waste somewhere in a place where they cannot see it and feel its effects. An educated person will think about it’s effect to the world that caused by the plastic waste and it’s damage. We can start educated our nearby friends and family about the plastic waste and it’s danger. It all starts from ourselves.

2.      SINGLE USE AND MULTIPLE USE PLASTIC.

Single Use plastic is plastic that you will throw away after you use it and will end in the trash bin or land fill. Single Use plastic is something that easy to found around us. For example of Single Use plastic are, Mineral water bottle, Bubble Wrap, food wrappers and plastic straw. If one day you use one of them 3 or 4 times, then how about if you use it everyday. Can you imagine how much plastic waste you produce?.

Different with Multiple Use plastic, Multiple Use plastic commonly produced with high quality plastic material that allowed the owner to use it repeatedly. The example of the Multiple-Use plastic are tumbler, reuse-able plastic food container, and other things. Not only plastic that are allowed to multipled use. Other material that have been proven that not harm our body are allowed to be used. One of them are steel straw to replace plastic straw. If you use 3 plastic straw a day, it will ended with ±700 of plastic straw waste that will harm your enviroment. But if you replace it with steel straw that allowed you to clean it, you will reduce the possibility of ±700 of plastic straw  ended in the land fill. It’s only you, then how about everyone implemented this ?

3.     LEARN TO RECYCLE PLASTIC

Plastic recyle is a lesson that everyone must learn. Every school started from the lowest grade, must teach a lesson about how to recycle your own plastic waste. You can try a lot of way to recylce your own plastic waste from the internet. it's true that the impact is very small, but if you are succeed to recycle your own plastic waste then you then you manage your own plastic waste. Another simple plastic recycle that you can do is re-use the single use plastic bag, this is mostly done by people. Besides reducing plastic waste, reusing the single use plastic bag will reduce your cost on buying new plastic bag.

Recommendations

A small movement makes a big change, that is what people in nature lover community do to support people to save the earth from reducing plastic usage. A little things we can do to help to reduce the usage of plastic. We can start it from our self, if you’re a contetnt creator. You can write down an article about the hazardous of plastic to our earth to aware people on the internet. If you’re a teacher, you can teach your kids to how to recyle their own plastic waste, if you’re a member of government part, you can make a stirct law and policy to force and limit the use of plastic in the community.

Whatever of your status, position and occupation. You can do a little things to save the earth from the disaster that causes by plastic waste. Plastic will break down at least 50 – 100 years after being produced. Before the past plastic getting break down, there will be more new plastic will be produced to will be produced to meet human needs.
